1. El Camino

God damn that is a late entry for one of the albums of the year.

The Black Keys have pulled out a superb collection of songs.

Many people have said they fill the gap The White Stripes left.

My personal opinion is that they are better than the Stripes, and can put together a more cohesive and consistent album.

Now if you will excuse me, I’m going to listen to it again…

  4. You Rock My World - Michael Jackson

    (Epic, 2001)

The first in the new “Chooon! Same about the album…” playlist, it is fair to say that The King of Pop had seen better albums. 2001’s ‘Invincible’ was well received by fans and critics, but even after looking at the track listing you would struggle to find anything memorable apart from this track. When a man turns out albums such as ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’, turning out an album that’s alright, but forgettable is a step down to say the least.

The man is still a legend though. No question. And this is still a cracking track.

    “CHOOON! Shame about the album…”

  5. TopFiveThursday: Most Frustrating Games

I am currently playing for my freedom. Like Tron except less epic. Nightly I play a 3v1 game of Left 4 Dead 2 with my mates and I am currently the 1. I have to win to free myself. My AI counterparts are useless. I get very frustrated. Thus this becomes a nightly ritual of progressive anger.

So in light of this, the Top 5 MOST FRUSTRATING THAT I WANT TO THROW THE REMOTE AT THE CONSOLE Games:

    1. Left 4 Dead 2
    2. FIFA 10
    3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 [Mainly the co-operative special ops missions.]
    4. 2010 FIFA World Cup: South Africa [I have broken my remote slightly because of this game.]
    5. Rock Band [We completed the endless set list after a few hours and got a tiny reward for all of our time and effort. Bloody thing.]

I will gain my L4D2 freedom one day. One day…

  6. Radar: Goonies Never Say Die

Since I have started trying to widen my music taste, the one thing that I have lacked in my collection is local artists. Not the Blackpool music scene is non-existent, it is just put in the shadows when you have Liverpool and Manchester just up the road. However this band is a welcome addition to my collection, and I discovered them in the last place I’d ever expect, HMV. As a mainstream music store, any rare or unique artists that are in stock are either very expensive or not about very often. Even then a lot of content gets omitted completely and is usually only found in the independent music stores or online. For example I recently was on the search for some ambient Brian Eno albums from the late 70’s and early 80’s, none of which were in any chain/mainstream stores; but all were in a ‘High Fidelity’ style record store up the road. Then again ambient music doesn’t usually feature heavily in the bigger stores. Or so I thought.

Blackpool band, Goonies Never Say Die were compared to Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky for their sound of instrumental cinematic rock. Now if that genre or those previous two band names mean nothing to you, this is a chance to try something new. As a snapshot of the genre, Mogwai and Explosions are the perfect starting points. Both have had their music used in films [Mogwai: Miami Vice, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait :: Explosions in the Sky: Friday Night Lights] and most tracks are extended pieces of loud, atmospheric and slowly paced rock music. No singer, just well composed movements of sound. Goonies Never Say Day are another band of this kind.

Goonies, who have a brilliant band, track and album names; are great at keeping the tracks varied, and have mixed the piano, guitars and percussion perfectly so the resulting sound is very broad and wonderful to listen to. Changes in pace and tone are smooth and expertly executed, and the result is an album that is best enjoyed when you sit back, relax, and just listen. It’s an ultimately calming and enjoyable experience.

Their album, In a Forest Without Trees, is out now, there is a free track available on their MySpace and a new album on the way in September. Check them out, and while you are there try Mogwai and Explosions too. You might like instrumental cinematic rock. I never thought I would.
